Darwin Runners & Walkers Inc. has currently about 488 members. The membership year starts in February but new members are welcome at any time. Membership costs $60 for a single registration or $120 for a family. Download the Registration Form here. The Annual General Meeting is held in March.
Regular road running or cross-country events are held on Wednesdays at 6:15 p.m. at pre-determined courses in the greater Darwin area. On weekends there are a few special events such as the Cross-Country Championships and Fun Run at Fred's Pass, and the City to Surf.
Wednesday events are usually 2 or 5 km, with some at 3, 6, 8.5 and 10 km. There is a 16.5 km road run, on a Saturday, mid year. Most courses are measured with a surveyor's wheel, while others are a good estimate.
A calendar is produced on an annual basis from April to April listing all runs in the year. The calendar is posted on this web site, it is available in the club's trailer at weekly runs, and is also placed in sports stores around Darwin.
While Darwin's best cross-country and road runners regularly participate and keenly compete, varying levels of competition emerge within a run or walk due to differing ages and abilities. On the other hand, some members are not out there to compete, but wish to engage in regular exercise to improve their fitness, supported by the presence of others. The club has always encouraged people of all ages and abilities who are willing to enjoy the improvement in fitness that running or walking brings. The youngest member is 1 and the oldest is 79. Many members supplement the club's runs with their own runs through the week.
Times are recorded for most events, the results being posted on this web site and in the Northern Territory News.
